Course DescriptionDeveloped by Command Spanish®, Inc., this program is designed to provide non-Spanish-speaking police officers with functional skills in Spanish. The program utilizes phonetic encoding to address the most important Spanish commands, questions, and phrases critical to police work.  No prior knowledge of Spanish is necessary.   

 

Topics include:     

 

    • Disarming a suspect  
    • Make arrests and ID individuals  
    • Stop and search a vehicle  
    • Conduct field sobriety tests  
    • Issue warrants  
    • Assist in emergencies  
    • Read the Miranda Warning  
    • Render aid to victims  
    • Correctly pronounce Hispanic names and other Spanish words  
    • Cross-Cultural training  
    • Language Menus 
    • Capstone Exercises/Practicals

 

Instructional GoalTo prepare non-Spanish-speaking police officers to use Spanish language skills to enhance their ability to aid victims and control offenders in potentially dangerous situations involving people who speak Spanish. 

 

Instructor:   Jason Kidd is a Lieutenant at the Harrisonburg (VA) Police Department where he has served for over 15 years. He is currently assigned as a Patrol Commander and after beginning his law enforcement career as a Spanish Interpreter he has held numerous positions including Jail Deputy, Patrol Officer, Mountain Bike Officer, Drug Investigator, Personnel Development Unit Sergeant, and Detective Sergeant of the Criminal Investigations Division. He is the Team Leader of the Crisis Negotiations Team and is active with the Crisis Intervention Team and other units. Kidd serves as an Adjunct Instructor at James Madison University, where he teaches courses including Criminal Procedure and Criminal Investigations and Evidence. He has taught a variety of law enforcement-related courses throughout the mainland United States and Puerto Rico. Kidd is a Licensor for copyrighted course material from Command Spanish, Inc. and he has been a Command Spanish, Inc. instructor since 2011. He has travelled extensively throughout the Spanish-speaking world and has taught internationally through the U. S. Department of State in El Salvador, Honduras, and Panama. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish from Virginia Tech as well as a Master of Public Administration Degree from James Madison University.
